When it comes to wood flooring, a lot of people cant see the wood for the trees (sorry, couldn’t help myself). So here’s a very simple guide on what you need to know.
If you’re thinking about laying down wood flooring, you have 3 options:
1. Laminate
2. Hardwood
3. Engineered wood
This was the thing to have it the early 1990’s. Essentially it’s not actually wood at all. Instead it is hardboard that has been covered over with a very tin layer of patterned veneer to make it look like wood. It’s a bit like a cardboard box in wrapping paper.
Laminate represents great value for money but has a b=very short life span and is difficult to maintain
A Scandinavian favorite. Hardwood is real, solid wood, cut from a real tree into uniform rectangle sections and then treated.
It comes in all varieties and offers an very natural finish that brings out the raw beauty of the wood. However it can be very expensive and is much thicker that it’s alternatives.
Engineered wood.
As the name suggests this is an ‘engineered’ solution that takes the best of both laminate and hardwood. It is made up of layers of ply wood topped with a nice, thick lamella (coating) of real wood on top.
It’s becoming ever popular due to its affordability and for the lovely finish it gives.
What our Designers recommend.
We’re head over heels in love with Engineered board. It’s affordable, durable, easy to maintain and in our opinion, even offers a BETTER finish than hardwood. This is because of the better evenness it offers that the latter, where home owners often have to content with the natural bubbliness of real wood.
