The challenge: growing family, growing need for space

Our clients came to us with two pressing needs. Their young children were growing up fast, and an additional bedroom had become essential. At the same time, one of them needed a dedicated home office — a space to work from properly, rather than making do with a corner of another room.

Because the property is a modern mid-terrace with a roof made up of multiple slopes rather than one simple pitch, a standard dormer wasn’t the right fit here. The brief was to find every usable inch of space within the existing roof structure itself, without altering its outward shape.

The solution: a highly technical Velux conversion

This became one of our most technically demanding projects, precisely because the roofline itself wasn’t changing. Instead of extending outward, our team converted the usable space within the multiple existing roof slopes — a job that calls for careful structural planning rather than straightforward extension.

The real finesse was in the design of the landing. It had to be configured to give clear access to three separate new spaces — the loft bedroom, the loft bathroom, and the office at the rear — all while working around the angles and junctions created by the multiple roof slopes. Seven Velux windows were fitted throughout to maximise natural light across every room, compensating for the lack of dormer-style vertical windows.

A three-room loft conversion — bedroom, bathroom and home office — created entirely within the existing roof structure, with no change to the property’s roofline or outward appearance.
